  Millions Raised in 4 days for Anti-Slavery Efforts

  

  We’ve posted in the past about the enormity of slavery today, here and abroad. It’s so huge and the resources currently going to fight are just drops in a bucket. But every little bit helps, right? Right. Of course bigger bits help even more. So what would happen if many individuals got together and raised one big donation to fight human trafficking? What if they set the goal of raising $1 million by God’s grace to this end? Something amazing would happen. And it did. Not just $1 million but $3.5 million!
  
  Passion 2012, a Christian conference for college students, brought 45,000 students to Atlanta over the past few days. And an equal number of people from around the world watched the streaming video via the internet. And together they sought donations and reached out to their communities to join them in giving to anti-slavery efforts. CNN did a news report on the conference here.

  International Justice Mission

  In the fight against trafficking of humans there are many good ministries and organizations. Hope Marketplace likes to highlight organizations and the work they’re doing- nationally and internationally. Most recently we highlighted Thistle Farms, a domestic organization whose merchandise we sell. This time we’d like to bring to your attention International Justice Mission (IJM) based in Washington D.C.
  
  “International Justice Mission (IJM) is a human rights agency that brings rescue to victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. IJM lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals work with local officials to secure immediate victim rescue and aftercare, to prosecute perpetrators and to ensure that public justice systems - police, courts and laws - effectively protect the poor.”

Robyn is a vibrant woman who has been a leader in a variety of women’s ministries for years. This was our first time meeting her and she quickly put us at ease with her warmth and obvious interest in us and what we hope to accomplish.

  Renting Lacy, A book review

  

  Have you ever wondered who that teenage girl is you saw leaning through the passenger car window obviously negotiating with a potential “john”? What’s her story? How did she end up doing this instead of going to school and the mall and worrying about what to wear to the school dance?
  
  Obviously everybody’s story is unique but there is a lot of commonality with prostituted girls. It’s that story which is told in Renting Lacy. The story of a few different girls trafficked in different ways but with common factors putting them at risk, pulling them in and holding them in a life of prostitution. Read more »

  What’s on your nightstand?

  

  I love this question for somebody I don’t know well. Is it fiction or non-fiction? Maybe a magazine or a section from the newspaper, or just an alarm clock (gasp!). What’s on my nightstand shouldn’t be on my nightstand. On a coffee table, sure. But not next to the place where in 10 minutes I hope to get a good night’s sleep. So, I have some recommended reading for those who can carve out sometime earlier in the day. Read more »
